The Golden Eagles struggled from the field in the first half, something that has plagued them in the young season. While Jahii Carson seemed to be able to score at will for Arizona State It took foul trouble to slow him down as he had to sit for the final few minutes after picking up his second foul. And even then, Marquette still went into the half down 43-33.
However, the Golden Eagles came out of the break looking like a different team; mainly through the hot 3-point shooting from Jake Thomas.
But it was a technical foul at about the 12 minute mark that looked to turn the tide in Marquette’s favor for a short moment. Jermaine Marshall made a tough basket to put Arizona State up 58-54 but ran his mouth in Davante Gardner’s ear on the way back down the floor. Then another technical came immediately after as the crowd expressed their displeasure and one unruly fan decided to throw a glow stick on the court in protest. The Sun Devils coach Herb Sendek had to get on the mic to lecture the home crowd. Gardner made 3 of 4 freebies.
The remainder of the game was a back and forth tussle with neither team being able to pull away. Up and down the court each team went matching basket for basket. It was fun and exciting right to the end where Marquette had a chance for the win.
Buzz Williams used the team’s final timeout with about 36 seconds remaining and down one. Jake Thomas missed a 3-pointer, but Marquette was able to foul immediately sending the Sun Devils to the line for a one-and-one with 8 seconds left. Jermaine Marshall made the first but missed the second, giving the Golden Eagles one last shot to tie or win outright. Derrick Wilson brought the ball up the floor, but had his floater rejected by 7-foot-2 Jordan Bachynski. His seventh block of the night.
It was a tough loss for Marquette, but they showed a spark they haven’t really shown yet this season. And they did it without their leading scorer, Todd Mayo, who missed the game with an ankle injury.
Davante Gardner finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. Jake Thomas ended up shooting 5 of 12 from behind the arc and 16 points on the night. And Derrick Wilson had his best game of the season, finishing with 14 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds.
Marquette next plays on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28) against Cal State Fullerton in the Wooden Legacy tournament. And Arizona State just so happens to be in the 8 team field with the Golden Eagles. So we could see these two teams go at it again in less than a week. And given how fun tonight’s game ended up being, I hope we get the quick rematch.
