Your Week 2 Big East conference weekly honors.
Player of the Week: Doug McDermott, Creighton Bluejays
I wrote in last week’s player and rookie of the week announcements that you should get used to seeing the senior All-American’s name in this spot often throughout the season. Lo and behold, two weeks, two player of the week honors for McDermott. The Bluejays had only one game scheduled last week, but McDermott made the most of it. In an 82-72 victory over Tulsa, Doug finished with 33 points and 15 rebounds while converting 12 of 15 from the free throw line. His level of play right now is every bit as expected. And those expectations are for him being the best offensive player in the country. He’s looked it so far.
Rookie of the Week: Jaren Sina, Seton Hall Pirates
Sina averaged 8 points, 2 assists and 20 minutes per game in Seton Hall’s three games played last week, despite only starting one of those three games. That included a 13 point performance against Virginia Tech off the bench in which the Pirates escaped with a 68-67 win on a neutral court. Sina was 4 of 5 from behind the arc in the game, which included him making three in a row at one point in the first half. This is Sina’s first Big East Rookie of the Week recognition.
