A slew of tournaments taking place during the upcoming holiday weekend could present us with some exciting match-ups involving Big East teams. And we could even see Big East teams play against other Big East teams. Giving us an interesting preview a month before conference play even begins.
Providence vs. Kentucky (Sunday, December 1)
The up and coming Friars will get their shot against the top-5 ranked Wildcats on a neutral floor. I’m higher on PC than most, but I think they have enough talent to hang around with UK for a while and maybe even pull the shocking upset. Or they could get blown out and most people wouldn’t even notice.
Marquette at Arizona State (Monday, November 25)
The Golden Eagles have been far from sharp in the young season mainly due to their ineptness on offense, and now they get a true road game at Arizona State on Monday night. They will have to be much better than what they have looked in their last two games if they are going to get out of there with a quality non-conference road victory.
Creighton vs. Arizona State (Thursday, November 28)
The Bluejays have had no such problems on offense as they are the second ranked offense in college basketball currently, and will get those same Sun Devils later in the week in the first round of the Wooden Legacy. Creighton could actually play Marquette in that tournament if the bracket breaks that way for each.
Xavier vs. Iowa (Thursday, November 28)
The Hawkeyes have started the season 5-0 and should be considered a legitimate contender in the Big Ten this season. Their defense is stifling and will certainly provide a stiff test for the Musketeers in their opening round tilt in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
DePaul vs. Wichita State (Monday, November 25)
The Blue Demons get a nationally ranked Shocker team on a neutral court in the opening round of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. Anything could happen.
- Villanova plays Wake Forest in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. A victory would setup a likely meeting with Kansas. Also, it’s possible that Nova could play Xavier if the tournament played out that way for each team.
- Sticking with the Battle 4 Atlantis, if Xavier beats Iowa in round 1, they could play Tennessee in the second round. Those two teams just met three weeks ago when the Musketeers won 67-63 on their home floor.
- St. John’s will be participating in the Barclays Center Classic this upcoming weekend. They play Penn State in round one and would then play either Ole Miss or Georgia Tech for the championship or losers bracket.
