Blue Ribbon Releases Preseason All-American Teams; Two Big East Players Made It

Yesterday on this blog we looked at Blue Ribbon’s preseason top-25 list (since it included two Big East teams) and dished out some information on the annual Blue Ribbon publication.

Today we look at the four Blue Ribbon preseason All-American teams where the Big East is also represented.  It probably isn’t much of a coincidence that the two Big East players with this honorable designation from Blue Ribbon are from the two teams on their top-25 list.

It’s no surprise that Creighton forward and two time All-American Doug McDermott is on their first team.  McDermott has averaged 23 point and 8 rebounds over the last two season while being one of the most efficient and versatile scorers in the country inside and out.  He will be the consensus Big East preseason player of the year and will make one last run at national player of the year.  It’s not often that such prolific players hang around for four years.  Will he be a three-time first team All-American?  It would be quite the feat if he is.

The other Big East player on Blue Ribbon’s preseason All-American team is Marquette senior forward Davante Gardner; on the third team.  Gardner’s stats are not nearly as impressive as McDermott’s – he averaged 11.5 points and 4.8 rebounds last year – but his effectiveness is right up there.  While the two players both stand 6-foot-8, their games are totally different given that Gardner has approximately 60 pounds on Doug.  Even so, Davante is a very skilled big man who has some of the best foot work in the paint to go with a soft touch.  That touch is best on display at the free throw line where he converted 83.5% of his attempts last season.  And his big size requires double teams from opponents, opening up space for teammate while taking up plenty of it on the defensive end.

The rest of the four Blue Ribbon preseason All-American teams look like this:

Adreian Payne, Michigan State
