The Battle 4 Atlantis, with it's gorgeous setting and unique basketball facility, will host two Big East teams in the same preseason tournament.

Big East Holiday Tournaments Preview

Few things whet my sports palette more than the promise of holiday hoops where intriguing out of conference matchups abound, often in ridiculously beautiful tropical environments (while I’m freezing my butt off at my folks’ place in the northeast…but I digress).

Aside for some slots to be filled by low major schools, the holiday tournament schedule is all squared away. Chris Dobbertean (@DobberSBN) of BloggingTheBracket.com did a wonderful job compiling a meta-list of all the pre-conference tournaments. However, since you’re here because you LOVE Big East basketball, I took the liberty of breaking down the tournaments by Big East school.

Based on last year’s figures, the tournament that immediately jumps out is the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, in which Georgetown will participate. It features the lowest average field RPI and boasts four NCAA Tournament teams. Of course this is a new season and things change, but you have to believe the college basketball pundits will be talking this one up more than any other tournament featuring a Big East team.

The other big takeaway? There will be not just one but TWO holiday tournaments featuring multiple Big East Teams. These were fields that were settled prior to the breakup and reboot of the conference. In the Battle 4 Atlantis, Villanova and Xavier may end up butting heads, while in the Wooden Legacy it’s Creighton and Marquette that may give it a go prior to conference play. Neither potential matchup would affect conference standings, but they are intriguing nonetheless.
